A technique for ceramic decoration that was perfected in the mid 18th century and used widely thereafter for mass-produced wares.

The technique consisted of inking an engraved copper plate with an ink prepared from one of the metallic oxides, and then transferring the design to paper which, while the ink was still wet, was pressed on to the ware, leaving the desired imprint. This was then fixed by firing.
