A horn-like material derived from the plates on the back of the hawk’s-bill turtle. It is a translucent yellow, mottled with reddish brown, and capable of a high polish.

Tortoiseshell has been used since ancient times for making small articles such as combs, brooches, snuffboxes, etc., and for inlay in furniture.
