satinwood

A smooth ornamental wood that can be polished to a high gloss.

There are two varieties: one imported from the East Indies (Ceylon Satinwood or East Indian Satinwood); and one imported from the West Indies (Jamaican Satinwood or West Indian Satinwood).

It was very popular with English cabinetmakers in the second half of the 18th century.
