salt glaze

A glaze with a slightly rough pitted surface, generally used on stoneware (which vitrifies at too high a temperature for the use of lead glaze.

It is produced by throwing salt into the kiln where the pots are being baked when the temperature is at its highest. The sodium from the salt combines with silicates in the body of the pots to form a fine glaze.
