papier-mâché

A material consisting basically of paper-pulp, or of sheets of paper pasted together, which hardens when dry and is often treated so as to resemble varnished or lacquered wood or plaster. Used for mouldings in the early 18th century, trays and boxes in the late 18th century, and furniture in the 19th century.
