Until the 19th century small bronzes or bronze-mounted porcelain were used as paperweights. The decorative glass paperweight was a 19th century innovation.

The most sought after are the millefiori and latticino types, or those with colourful enclosures, such as lizards, fruit and single flowers, the best of which were produced in France in the 1840s.
