nef

A vessel in the shape of a ship, usually of silver, used in the later Middle Ages to hold the lord's napkin, knife and spoon. By the 16th century nefs were used as table ornaments, particularly in Germany and Switzerland. Many were elaborate and accurate models of fully rigged ships.
