millefiori

Millefiori (literally "thousand flowers") is the name given to a highly decorative technique in glass, notably paperweights. It involves drawing out threads of variously coloured glass and cementing them together to make a flower-like cane.

The technique was known in ancient Egypt and Rome, rediscovered in 16th century Venice, and perfected in the mid 19th century.
