lead glaze

A transparent glaze for pottery that consists of galena or lead oxide with silaceous sand, salt and an alkali such as potash. It is transparent but colour may be added. The glaze is applied to pottery that has already been fired and the glaze is bonded to the surface by a subsequent firing.

Lead glazes have seldom been used since the early 19th century.
