Originally the scarf worn across knight's helmet, and its stylised representation in heraldry.

Later, the term was used for any deeply scalloped piece of drapery and, by extension, a fringe-like ornament carved on furniture, painted on ceramics, etc. Such decoration was particularly popular on 17th-18th century French faience and porcelain.
