knitting sheathA knitting sheath was an item of carved wood, popular in the 18th and 19th centuries. It was used to hold one needle and support the knitting, while the knitter knitted with the other needle. The sheath could be tucked into the waistband or tied around the waist. Knitting sheaths were given as love tokens in the same way as lovespoons.
