hydria

A jar of ancient Greek pottery for carrying or storing water. It is usually large and urn-shaped and has a flat bottom. It is characterised by two horizontal loop-handles (for lifting) and one or two vertical handles (for dipping or pouring).

Early examples have a distinct neck set off from the shoulder. Later examples have a rounded shoulder with the neck forming a continuous curve with the body: see kalpis.
