The technique of cutting glass in cameo - that is, cutting away the background to leave raised decoration.

The technique was first employed in the Middle East, and later in 17th and 18th century Germany, notably by Franz Gondelach.

The oppposite technique - cutting glass in intaglio - is known as tiefschnitt.
