guinea

A British gold coin first issued in 1663. The guinea was originally worth one pound or twenty shillings, but over the following years the value fluctuated between twenty and thirty shillings. Eventually a royal proclamation of December 1717 fixed the value of the guinea at twenty-one shillings. The last guinea was minted in 1813.
