Originally, a small portable writing desk made since the 16th century, with a sloping front door, hinged at the bottom edge, that can be opened downwards to provide a writing surface.

From the 17th century onwards, the term escritoire or scrutoire usually referred to such a writing desk mounted on a stand or, more usually, a chest-of-drawers.
