entablature

In Classical architecture, an entablature is the superstructure of mouldings and bands lying horizontally between the tops of the columns and the pediment. An entablature is generally divided into three sections:

the architrave
the lowest section, immediately above the columns
the frieze
the central section, consisting of an unmoulded strip which may or may not be ornamented
the cornice
the uppermost section, projecting below the pediment

The structure and design of the entablature varies with the three classical orders: Doric, Ionic and Corinthian.
