chinoiserie

Chinoiserie was a style of decoration inspired by Chinese and Japanese art and design as it was perceived in Europe.

In the 18th century, when porcelain, lacquerware and other products imported from China and Japan were extremely fashionable, many European designers and craftsmen tried to imitate Asian designs. In doing so, they not infrequently created their own fanciful versions of the Orient.

The style was at its height from 1750 to 1765.
