chalice

An ancient name for a drinking cup, the name now being restricted to the communion cup used in Roman Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, Anglican, Lutheran and some other Christian churches. Chalices, used to hold sacramental wine during the Eucharist, are often made of precious metal, and they are sometimes richly enamelled and jewelled.
