Caneware

A tan-coloured unglazed stoneware developed by Wegwood circa 1770, by refining the clay used by peasant potters to make buff-brown wares. Originally it was used for ovenware such as game-dishes or pie-dishes, but later it was decorated with enamel and encaustic painting, and with sprigged decoration in the same way as Jasperware.
