Hester Bateman (1709-1794)

The most famous of female silversmiths, noted for her domestic silver of elegant simplicity. Her husband, John Bateman, who worked in gold and silver, died in 1760. Hester took over the family business, registering her mark at the Goldsmiths' Hall, London, in 1761. From then until her death, the Bateman workshop produced much fine household plate.
