A decorative form of art - named after a shop opened in Paris in 1895 by Samuel Bing - that was very fashionable and influential from the 1890s to the 1920s.

Features of art nouveau include: curvilinear forms based on the shapes of flowers and flames, opalescent colours; and fundamentally unrelated images combined in a single design.
